With hundreds or thousands of miles of line to maintain, they know that the conventional approach of sending linemen out to find faults is time consuming and expensive. Radial distribution feeders are susceptible to various short-circuit events such as symmetrical faults (three phase) and unsymmetrical faults including single-line-to-ground, double-line-to-ground, and line-to-line faults. These system faults can arise from causes such as severe lightning and wind, animal contacts, traffic accidents, or utility equipment failure. Reduces time spent physically inspecting power lines Quickly identifying the source and location of faults is the key to cost-efficient system maintenance. But there was no power quality monitoring instrument available to replace tried-and-true method of “flying the lines,” a physical inspection of power lines. Until now. Installed into Encore Series Software at a power substation , the Radial Fault Locator Answer Module employs a proven algorithm to calculate the distance from the substation to the identified fault source. The software identifies the type of fault and estimates the distance from the substation to the fault providing answers quickly and accurately. Accessible from the web browser of any computer, the data generated by the Radial Fault Locator AnswerModule allows managers to immediately dispatch linemen to the location of the fault, saving time and money and getting power restored quickly.
