S E R I E S 61000 SYSTEM TM AnswerModule® kVAR Change Verification Perform Condition-Based Maintenance on Your Capacitor Banks and Their Switching Devices Capacitors provide voltage support and correct displacement power factor on power distribution systems. Deployed in banks, some capacitors are permanently connected while others are switched on and off as needed. Most of the attention to capacitor bank performance focuses on transients resulting from capacitor bank switching. The Dranetz-BMI Encore Series Software CapSwitchTM AnswerModule® quickly and remotely identifies these transients. Beyond traditional power quality issues such as transients, there are fundamental concerns about whether or not capacitor banks are actually energized when they are switched on. In the past, this type of information required a physical inspection of the bank. Now, with the kVAR ChangeVerifier AnswerModule, you can determine whether the bank is energized and if kVAR generated by the capacitor bank is evenly distributed across all three phases. For example, with a 1,200-kVAR capacitor bank, you should see approximately 400 kVAR on each phase when the bank is successfully energized. kVAR imbalance is an indication of blown fuses or failed capacitor cans. The kVAR Change Verifier AnswerModule enables you to perform real-time capacitor bank performance analysis from your computer, including: • Monitoring capacitor bank performance;• Determining kVAR increase on each phase; • Determining if kVAR changes result in unbalance phenomena following capacitor bank energization; • Performing condition-based maintenance on capacitor banks and their switching devices. Based on the results of this AnswerModule, you can take corrective action in a productive and cost-effective manner. If the AnswerModule indicates kVAR imbalance, a physical inspection of the capacitor bank is required and can be scheduled. The kVAR Change Verification AnswerModule was developed for use with capacitor banks downstream from the monitoring location. The software works for any capacitor bank configurations— single, back-to-back, grounded or ungrounded—and also handles any voltage levels ranging from transmission to distribution. S E R I E S 61000 SYSTEM TM How It Works The kVAR Verifier AnswerModule calculates the total kVAR increase in all three phases by computing kVAR changes in the individual phases based on the current and voltage waveforms before and after the capacitor bank energizes. The total measured kVAR is then compared to the actual or physical capacitor bank kVAR, which you enter. The analysis is presented in the Encore Series System event summary report. Viewable using any web browser, this report is easily accessible by managers and engineers responsible for tracking and ensuring capacitor bank performance. The ready availability of these reports means that appropriate personnel get the information they need to perform condition-based maintenance. This saves time and money, and can ultimately prevent interruptions or outages on the power system.
